“I had to protect my brother and sister, so I became a practical psychologist just out of necessity.”
Though his mother remarried when Tony was 12 years old, it didn’t make things any easier for him.
According to Tony Robbins, his mother was a drug and alcohol addict who suffered from bipolar and narcissistic personality disorder. As the scapegoat of the household, he was often restricted from having the autonomy and freedom to make his own decisions.
Though Tony was a motivated young man with a natural talent for entrepreneurship, his mother often sabotaged his efforts and wanted him to only focus on taking care of her and the household. If he didn’t comply or if he stood up for himself, he was either physically or emotionally abused and punished.

After graduating from Glendora High School, Tony left his home at the age of 17 when his mother threatened his life and kicked him out. Robbins didn’t look back, moved out, and had a few handyman jobs as a janitor and a part-time mover.
As Tony stated in one of his interviews:
“If my mom had been the mother I thought I wanted, I wouldn’t be as driven; I wouldn’t be as hungry. I wouldn’t have suffered, so I probably wouldn’t have cared about other people’s suffering as much as I do. And it made me obsessed with wanting to understand people and help create change.”
One fateful day when he was moving to the home of a family friend, Tony asked his friend-uncle how he was able to change his life around and achieve success. The uncle indirectly introduced Robbins to Jim Rohn, the most well-known motivational speaker at the time, and told Tony about how a seminar changed his life.
