- 1979 – British inventor Michael Aldrich created the first online shopping experience, which had a TV connected to a computer with a telephone line.
- 1982 – Boston Computer Exchange, the first eCommerce company launched their business selling used computers.
- 1990 – The World Wide Web is invented by Tim Berners-Lee and is accessible by the public, which opened the gateway to internet shopping.

Final Thoughts
In short, people are choosing to switch over to smartphones for their shopping experience and there is also a huge gap between shopping opportunities that people want over social media vs traditional eCommerce websites.
If bigger brands want to increase their revenue, sales, and numbers, they need to also allow shoppers to buy directly through social media through apps such as TikTok, Instagram, etc. As well as paying attention to AI integration and implementation on their websites.
Sooner or later, shopping will shift to VR and AR, but that’s a topic for another day and still has a long way to go.
